Michael Keane, Ph.D.Michael Keane, PhD is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Watertown, MA.Trained in NY City, he came to Boston for an internship in child and family therapy at Children’s Hospital. He stayed to do a post doc in clinical psychology where he co-created a psychology program for pediatric oncology patients. He subsequently co-developed a program at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute’s Jimmy Fund Pediatric Clinic.
Originally trained in Family therapy, he has advanced trainings in hypnosis, systems oriented group therapy, psychodrama, neurolinguistic programming, Internal Family Systems, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Internal Family Systems for Couples and Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples. He weaves and integrates the skills from these various trainings to provide skillful therapy for his clients.
His interest in healing from traumas that can be held in the body led him to become a trained yoga teacher and yoga therapist. He combines this with his sensorimotor training.
The power and importance of all of our relationships in friendships, marriages, colleagueship’s and partnerships has led him to recently found the Relationship Center of Boston. This relationship work is designed for couples/partners who seek intimacy rather than conflict, for parents who want to relate to their kids with joy rather than struggle, and for individuals who want to reduce their internal conflicts.
Individual Psychotherapy
Individual therapy is undertaken to reduce internal suffering in the form of problematic behaviors, beliefs, feelings and somatic responses that generate tension and negative thinking. Therapy can help people resolve barriers that interfere with the positive qualities of joy, compassion, peace, self esteem, spiritual connection and love. It can be a journey to become more conscious, more aware of one self and one’s relationship. The result is personal freedom. and a mastery as well as improved relationships.
Couples Therapy
All couples have conflicts that can interfere with every aspect of daily life. The partners in a couple don’t intend to argue or compete or ignore or dismiss. Group Therapy
A Group becomes a microcosm of members’ lives, problems and conflicts. A group becomes a safe place to actively work on our issues with the support of others. Members learn to subgroup around any issue so that no one ever has to work alone. For example the group might explore the inner critic or the inner judge or inner doubter in order to develop more inner harmony.
Family and Child Therapy
In family therapy we look at the whole system that has developed dysfunctional patterns that generate conflict in the family. Often family therapy is initiated because of problem behavior of one or more of the children. It can include work with adult children and their parents. Family therapy explores all the interactions of the couple and the interactions of each parent with the child or children.
Yoga Therapy for Depression
Yoga therapy draws on some very powerful tools from the science of yoga. There are many tools to reduce anxiety and alleviate many of the symptoms of depression. These tools can help shift low feelings about self, obsessive thinking, anxiety from negative predictions. Different breathing techniques help regulate feelings and tensions that exist in the body that generate anxiety Specific restorative postures can be learned to release body tensions and to develop calming in the mind.
